A Note on This Beer
Fremont’s Coffee Dark Star, Prairie’s BOMB!, and Founder’s KBS opened the heavens and revealed to dark beer fans a boozy secret: Bourbon barrel-aging + coffee = WOW! But even those heavy hitters can’t compare to Great Basin’s 427 days of barrel-aging and 18 hrs of coffee steeping in their Scytale Imperial Stout - Pica Pica Coffee Edition.
427 days! Let that soak in, just like Great Basin let this 11.8% ABV behemoth soak in a whiskey’d combo of Wild Turkey, Jim Beam, and Rogue Bourbon barrels. After aging, they cold steep this Stout 18 hrs with 1.25 lbs of Guatemalan/Ethiopian coffee per barrel -- you might as well call Mr. Coffee!
Wake up and smell the espresso fudge cake, cause this beast is gonna smack you up with flavor. Lots of chocolate, lots of coffee, and even more chocolate smothered in bourbon caramel sauce. After aging well over a year, the booze is vivid yet mellow, but don’t kid yourself into thinking you won’t feel that 11.8% ABV. It’s there. Waiting.
The original Scytale has been a hit for Tavour’s boozehounds who rate it an average of 4.46 outta 5. Wait until they get a load of this Coffee-soaked edition. Founders who?
Serve at 55-60 degrees with blackened catfish or chocolate cheesecake
