A Note on This Beer

Today’s 5X Red clocks in at a mind-bending 17% ABV! That makes it by far the booziest Red Ale we’ve ever shared on Tavour.

Every sip splashes across the taste buds like a babbling brook from Candyland. You’ll taste waterfalls of tangy citrus and rich fig, cascades of caramel and crème brûlée, and swirling eddies of black cherry and strawberry flavor.

The mouthfeel is velvet-smooth, so it’s all too easy to completely forget that giant ABV and slurp down a whole can in just minutes. You might want to invite a friend around to help you out with this one!

Finding a willing friend shouldn’t be difficult. Just let it slip that you have a rare release from the high ABV masters at California’s Five Threads, and you’ll have plenty of volunteers to help drink it. Buzzfeed named this crew the Best Brewery in California!

Outside of the Golden State, you’ll be hard pressed to find a drop of this stuff though. So, if you want to try the biggest, boldest, booziest Red Ale we’ve ever had the pleasure of sharing, you’ll have to snag yours before it’s gone.

For 17% this is a great Red. You can taste the caramel flavor and then the red notes of different spices. I would put this on my daily list if it were not for the high alcohol content. One of these and I was feeling it. There is an alcohol like aftertaste but, it really is a tasty beer considering.

Unique style so not sure what to expect. Turns out it was very good. Balanced though low hop bitterness. No alcohol astringency in spite of high ABV. Like a true Red on super steroids. Wish I had gotten more than one. Now I know.

I thought this was good; however, the eye thought it was amazing! Not too hoppy with the 100 IBUs and didn't feel overly boozy despite the 17 ABV. Easy to sip on and too quickly have it gone. Should've ordered more than one!

The cans I received had beer on them, there was pressure but no carbonation. Nor sure if I had bad cans but this Red Ale didn’t have many of the taste characteristics that I’m use to. I tasted licorice and some spice and was very bitter. Maybe I had some bad cans. But of course the ABV was there!

unfortunately this brewery is now closed. it was very drinkable. can had beer on them but still had pressure and didn't have as much head on it as some of the pics I've seen. as somebody else noted I had this too.

Nice level of bitterness. The boozy quality does not overwhelm. irish reds are known to be drinkable, but this is a sipper.

this was amazing. for a huge abv beer, this is smooth-drinking, not boozy, and extremely flavorful. nose is vanilla and candied orange. matched on the palate, lots of smooth orange liqueur flavors. mouth feel is very similar to an English barleywine. there’s a hint of bitterness at the end that keeps it balanced. very impressed, wish I had bought more.
