A Note on This Beer
Today’s beer name, APEX, feels oddly on point. After all, if you’ve managed to scoop up one of Black Project’s brews before, you already know that these guys are at the tippy-top of the Sour game:
- Everyone from Craft Beer & Brewing to Food & Wine hails Black Project as one of the best Sour breweries in Colorado.
- They were named Brewery of the Year by the Denver Post.
- They focus on limited releases and rarely-repeated recipes (like today’s tart, orange-cinnamon elixir) so the brewers can keep exploring new flavors and pushing boundaries.
- Their Sours have racked up a heap of shiny GABF medals!
Grab a can of today’s APEX, and you’re practically holding liquid gold. The brewers used real oranges to give this Fruited Sour a juicy, tangy, citrus glow, then went even further with a kiss of cinnamon for complexity!
Each sip tastes like a bright summer-morning mimosa with a sprinkle of breakfast spice, and it’s positively delicious. Just grab your cans quick — Black Project’s masterful brews rarely leave Colorado, and they may never craft APEX again!

Very sharp sour. Never had anything this distinct. I really enjoyed how much the sour notes came out at the start of each sip

Never thought orange and cinnamon would taste good together but this sour has done just that!

Almost too sour, but the orange cinnamon and a bit of dryness remind me of a cider.

Cool sour, I was skeptical about the cinnamon but it works

Good flavor, but at the top edge of sour for me.

First can (of 4) didn't have as much cinnamon, but when it came through on the others it added something very unique

I don’t normally go for this sort of flavor, but it is really fabulous. The cinnamon just adds a bit without being overpowering.

Great sour, tart with a slight contrasting cinnamon taste that I honestly was surprised to enjoy

Tastes like Doc’s cranberry spiced cider. Yum.

Not a fan of the cinnamon myself but great beer overall

Was my first wild ale, had a nice flavor on the intake, but the aftertaste was very off putting for me

Very sour orange flavor with just a hint of cinnamon. The cinnamon flavor lingers after drinking, which I surprisingly enjoyed (being not a huge fan of cinnamon).

Really surprised at how much i enjoyed this. Passed around in some glasses to some friends and we all thought this sour was very unique and in point

Definitely encroaching way too heavily on the too sour territory.

Black Project consistently makes great quality fruited sours. This isn't my favorite, but is good quality and enjoyable.

Unbelievably sour... I ask, to what end?

Tonight, from Black project spontaneous and wild ales in Denver, Colorado, it's "Apex"!
This Fruited sour runs 5.6% and opens with mimosa aromatics and follows swiftly with powerful lemon notes... fuuuuuck that... it's a symphony! In fact, if you fancy eating a whole lemon like an apple, this is for you! Holy hell... now I like this sort of thing and I love lemons so it's not a problem for me exactly, but this bad boy claims oranges and cinnamon on the ingredients roster and I'm not detecting even traces of that. This is straight up carbonated lemon juice!
