A Note on This Beer

John Glenn, the first American to eat in space, sucked food paste from tubes. That wasn’t very fun or flavorful, so NASA began freeze-drying tastier things for future missions — that’s what “astronaut food” is, folks!

Can you imagine what astronaut beer would be like? Now you don’t have to imagine at all!

Rivaling NASA’s innovators, the Urban Artifact team spent a year testing freeze-dried fruits and brewing processes. Because freeze drying removes the moisture that would otherwise dilute flavors and ABV, the finished (rehydrated) result proved to be incredibly juicy AND boozy!

In fact, today’s 15% ABV recipe is more than 50 percent fruit, which is pretty much impossible when using traditional brew methods!

As the brewers put it, they stuffed Astronaut Food - Blueberry with “as much freeze-dried blueberries as humanly possible.”

If Tang-drinking astronauts got hold of this succulent beast, they’d probably chuck all their other edible provisions straight out the airlock. The concentrated berry flavors hit right up front on first taste, swirling with an almost candy-like intensity. Then, it flows into a pronounced tartness, backed with shockingly gentle boozy warmth.

While you’re showing off this incredible brew to friends (who definitely won’t find it at any local store or space station), here’s another fun fact to share: alcohol is banned on spacecraft because it might explode. All the more reason to stock up your home fridge!

the 15% definitely is sneaky! But overall a pretty average sour

blueberries and balsamic vinegar. perfect description. gave it 2 stars because I like those flavors, but this is nearly undrinkable.

Absolutely delicious. Nailed the tartness of just ripe berries

Very tart berry. Had the profile more of a traditional sour. Would've liked more fruit

The most berry flavor I’ve ever had come through (probably because of the freeze-drying). Super strong blackberry and raspberry and not terribly sour or sweet.

So much berry flavor and you can hardly taste any alcohol. Crazy that these are 15%ABV

Drink it for the abv, but not the taste — it’s a pretty harsh berry taste, but it’s such a small can, it’s easy to move past once the buzz sets in.

Like drinking liquid blackberries and raspberries. Nothing else. The can was so tiny the 15% is hardly noticeable.

Ordered from Tavour, chilled, and poured into an 8 ounce chalice. Look: Deep purple, red grape color with no head, although you can see carbonation along the edges of the glass. Smell: Light earthy berry up front, followed by some light vinegar notes. Taste: Sour berry up front, serious tannins like a spoiled church wine. Blackberry and raspberry that hangs a while, then sour vinegar, a little booze and no bitterness. Feel: Medium to full feel, light tickle of carbonation, serious tannins with major drying like a wine (but not a good wine). Overall it is a weird beer. This is more like wine (like mad dog 20/20 or something). The vinegar note is not pleasant and even though this was a pricey beer we threw it out. Cheers!

I usually love a super tart sour, but this one had a bit of a funky taste to it. Not bad enough where I won’t finish the can, but definitely wouldn’t buy again. I had high hopes for this one too :/

Waaaay too easy for me to drink. I love me some sours. This one was like biting into a handful of sharply ripened berries. It reminded me of juice I feel in love with in Eastern Europe.

Actually enjoyed the heck out of this more than expected. It's a sour, given the freeze-dried fruit used I didn't think it was too tart at all. Drank like a high octane fruit spritzer. Not beer, but totally enjoyed it for what it was. The 8 oz format is like come on,... either put it in a 12 or put it in a 16.

The description and ABV got me to try it... But couldn’t drink more than two ounces. Tastes like fruit purée and red wine vinegar. Not a fan.

My first sip explained the small can - to say intense fruit, doesn’t begin to explain - it’s definitely a sipping beer - guess if NASA sent beer with astronauts, this would be it. Think freeze dried fruit you can drink....
