A Note on This Beer
John Glenn, the first American to eat in space, sucked food paste from tubes. That wasn’t very fun or flavorful, so NASA began freeze-drying tastier things for future missions — that’s what “astronaut food” is, folks!
Can you imagine what astronaut beer would be like? Now you don’t have to imagine at all!
Rivaling NASA’s innovators, the Urban Artifact team spent a year testing freeze-dried fruits and brewing processes. Because freeze drying removes the moisture that would otherwise dilute flavors and ABV, the finished (rehydrated) result proved to be incredibly juicy AND boozy!
In fact, today’s 15% ABV recipe is more than 50 percent fruit, which is pretty much impossible when using traditional brew methods!
As the brewers put it, they stuffed Astronaut Food - Blueberry with “as much freeze-dried blueberries as humanly possible.”
If Tang-drinking astronauts got hold of this succulent beast, they’d probably chuck all their other edible provisions straight out the airlock. The concentrated berry flavors hit right up front on first taste, swirling with an almost candy-like intensity. Then, it flows into a pronounced tartness, backed with shockingly gentle boozy warmth.
While you’re showing off this incredible brew to friends (who definitely won’t find it at any local store or space station), here’s another fun fact to share: alcohol is banned on spacecraft because it might explode. All the more reason to stock up your home fridge!
