A Note on This Beer

With a thick trunk that holds up to 31,700 gallons of water and velvety fruit chock-full of vitamin C, the baobab is known throughout Africa as the “tree of life.”

And until now, I’ll bet you’ve never had the pleasure of tasting it in a beer.

Today’s Baobiere is a 7.8% ABV Golden Ale, woven with a crisp, subtly tangy flavor from baobab fruit imported straight from West Africa!

Each sip is like sipping on a glass of fresh-made lemonade, intermingled with bites of bread crust topped with tamarind jam. Pleasant citrus aromas abound. It’s a delightful departure from the norm, a sipper sure to satisfy on a hot day.

And, it snagged the silver medal at last year’s New York International Beer Competition!

Baobiere also marks Montclair Brewery’s Tavour debut, which also has me super stoked! In just a few short years, this North Jersey crew has stacked up a mountain of acclaim:

  • In 2019, they won the ‘Best New Business’ Award from NJ Black Businesses
  • From NJ.com to the Washington Post, both local and national publications call out Montclair Brewery’s creations as “game changing.”
  • Suburban Essex Magazine named them the Best Brewery/Distillery in Essex County!

Honestly, I could go on and on about how awesome these guys are (heck, they were even featured in an AT&T commercial last year; they’re that cool!) but the best way to get to know them is to taste their innovative brews. You’re in luck today — you get to start with Baobiere!

Montclair Brewery is run by husband and wife team Denise Ford-Sawadogo and Leo Sawadogo who often express their Jamaican and West African roots through the art of brewing!

Description said it had lemonade vibes and I don't get that at all. It just kind of tastes like a stale ale that's nearly going skunky.

I didn’t know what baobab fruit tasted like before trying this beer, and I don’t think I do after, either – unless baobab fruit tastes like beer. At 7.8%, it seems unnecessarily boozy.

What it brewed with baobab powder? Has a chalkiness to it. Very fun. Reminds me of a light, malty, citrusy smoothy. Seems nutritional. :) Mix added good body, fruitiness and frothy head

16oz can from Tavour. Hazy golden amber pour, foamy head fades away. Malty aroma, faint fruity notes. Taste is sweet, malts sink back behind what must be the baobab fruit, almost a tropical flair to it. Thick and chewy, light bitterness at the end. Refreshing, too!

not what I was expecting and not something I’d want to have again. somewhat fruity but not crisp and refreshing like I was hoping it would be based on the description.

pretty dang unique with the fruit that was in it. it has a unique and slightly (slightly) chalky texture/flavor to it that was quite enjoyable. I'd consider buying it again

Daily corona battle. Cheesesteaks edition. I didn’t know what to expect of this. It’s clearly a corn sweet golden ale, with a touch of zip I guess from the weird tree fruit. Nothing. Overpowering or anything. Mild golden ale.

I liked it! I don’t like fruit beers, but this was good. They went full send on being unique, and I think they hit the mark. Fuck all the whiny beer snobs.

Still new to tasting different beers and learning about all the flavor notes. This did taste a little on the hoppier side than I prefer. I’d say I enjoyed 3/4 of the can but by the time I got down to the last little bit, it was hard to finish

Light floral aroma. Hints of wheat up front in taste with light tropical notes following up. A touch of bitterness.
