A Note on This Beer
The Baltic Porter took off in the 1800s, after Napoleon decided to be a jerk and use a blockade that prevented English Porters from shipping to parts of Northern Europe. What’s a person to do when access to their favorite beer suddenly stops? They find a way!
Today, SaltFire Brewing Co. embodies that same intrepid spirit with their Barrel Aged Baltic Porter (2020). Brewing it in Salt Lake City, the SaltFire crew is already a rebel in a town that, until recent decades, had a long history of being dry. And, in a state with notoriously low ABVs on draft and in grocery stores, BA Baltic Porter’s 8% ABV and rye barrel aging is BIG.
True to style, the brew’s Lager yeast gives it a cleaner, smoother profile than traditionally sticky Porters. It pours a deep mahogany and flows with notes of espresso and dark chocolate. The barrel-aging adds complexity, rounding out the brew with delicious oaky vanilla and brown sugar undertones.
Those who’ve been lucky enough to snag sips of this limited release are RAVING. @Jonathan R. calls it “The best barrel aged beer I’ve ever had!” While @Michelle L. says, “Smells delicious, taste even better! This would make a perfect beer float with vanilla bean ice cream!”
We do recommend trying at least a few sips sans ice cream to bask in its silky-smooth warmth, but after that, how you drink it is your call. Maybe SaltFire’s innovative spirit will spread!
