A Note on This Beer

Forget visions of sugar plums dancing in your head. I, for one, have never had a sugar plum, and don’t think I’m missing out on much. I’d take today’s frosting-covered, Barrel-Aged Winter Warmer over any plum, dancing or not.

Hoppin’ Frog consistently kills the Dark Beer competition, and they have medals up the lily pad to show for it. All that shiny glory is just icing on the cake for Tavour members — we keep bringing back this brewery’s dessert-delights because you all love them so much.

Today’s Barrel Aged Frosted Frog is no exception! It’s held rock-solid 4+ ratings on both Tavour and Untappd for three consecutive years!

Fans love its delectable notes of cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, and allspice all cloaked in vanilla frosting. And, how it’s all wrapped up in a caramelly, whiskey barrel-aged cloak with an 8.6% ABV that can’t even be detected by the most trained palate.

So this year, Christmas cheer is kind of a no-brainer. You can dream about dancing plums, or you can get Frosted!

Amazingly mild for a barrel-aged beer, big nutmeg and cinnamon up front, then settles into a woody whiskey, and finally a smooth brown ale. Like 3 different brews in one, plus a cool label, this bottle has it all.

Pours brown with little head that disappears quickly. Big cinnamon nose. Body is surprisingly light though there’s residual sweetness. Tastes like a diet liquid cinnamon bun. Really weird beer. I would have liked it had it had more body and less residual sweetness (maybe a touch more bitterness to balance sweetness?).

Christmas in a glass. My only issue is the ginger increases as it warms and dominates the flavor profile.

The barrel aged was more complex and flavorful than the canned variety, which is to be expected. Overall a great drinking experience.

This is rare for me but I actually preferred the standard frosted frog compared the the BA version. It probably did have the intended taste, it was definitely boozier and still worth the buy.

Look: light brown with little to no head, no lacing as we drank it... the look in the glass was almost like iced tea (yeah right?) Smell: spicy cinnamon, some nutmeg and gingerbread Taste: spicy cinnamon and nutmeg on the front, other spices (gingerbread?) in the middle, beery ale notes on the end with the spicy something in the nose. Bren says slightly boozy, but I don’t get boozy until I drink the whole friggin thing. Not super malty, which we were kinda hoping for. Feel: flat, carbonation is OK as it warms. Take a couple good swallows of it and walk away and it actually makes you thirsty. I love Christmas ales. Spicy, usually dark character and notes of coffee, maltiness, caramel, a bit boozy... this is none of that. Love the playfulness of Hoppin Frog and Tavour gave this one good ratings, but for me, besides the spice and 8%, there is not much Christmas about this Christmas ale... too beery for me, but if you like that, have at it.
