A Note on This Beer

If you’ve ever had a Long Island Iced Tea, you know it's a tasting flight full of spirits!

But, you won’t find this type of cocktail flavor expedition in many Stouts, or brews of any kind, really. It takes cunning craftsmanship to tame an arsenal of such boozy beasts.

The beer world is lucky the high ABV experts at River North took on the challenge with today’s Long Island Mr. Sandman Barrel Aged Stout. Their original Mr. Sandman took 1st place in Paste Mag’s blind tasting, beating out hundreds of the world’s top-rated Stouts!

To create today’s Long Island variant, the brewery took their champion dark beer and barrel-aged it in a blend of Gin, Whiskey, Tequila, and Rum Barrels!

Not to mention, they amped it up with zesty orange, as well — it wouldn’t be a true Long Island without a little citrus, now would it?

It’s quite impressive how they wove all of that distinctive liquor character seamlessly into a bittersweet, dark chocolate-covered orange Stout.

It’s fit for the menu at a fancy speakeasy — or a date night dinner at home.

Tavour strictly supports independent beer. River North Brewery is certified independent by the Brewers Association

Not my favorite. Definitely interesting. You can taste every liquor in there for sure. Orange comes through as well.

Wasn't a fan of this. No where near as good as their original Mr. Sandman.

The chocolate/orange works really well. Very unique.

The liquor notes came through but also mixed it into a weird amalgam of intense and weirdly meh. I love how intriguing it is. Hate how complex it is.

Brown sugar, coffee and huge barrel presence...was great for the winter time.

Deep dark brown with amber highlights. Small tan head disappears quickly. Aromas of chocolate, cherries, candied orange and light roast. Medium to heavy body with balance to the malt side. Some hop and roast bitterness though. Flavors of espresso, tobacco, chocolate, and orange. The orange is subtle, but nice in this way. Maybe a touch of alcohol but not over the top. Lots of residual sweetness that lingers.

Meh! Too much but not enough! Lots of heat! But no flavor shines through

Decent imperial, very drinkable for the ABV. Orange flavor mentioned doesn’t really come through

When I imagine drinking an imperial barrel aged stout this is what I think of. And then they added an orange delightful flavor into the mix. It’s like adding the comfort of Grand Marnier to this already sensual experience. I can only hope I can get to try this again.

Not my favorite Mr. Sandman. Cheers to River North for a bold barrel aged project. Complex barrel notes, obviously!

I really enjoyed the different flavors. Difficult to pin point individual ones, a lot going on, but bold and nice.
