A Note on This Beer

Junkyard Brewing may be a nanobrewery with teeny tiny batch sizes and limited releases, but make no mistake — they’re all about going BIG.

Big Flavors! Today’s Basement Business - Willett Rye (2020) is the first-ever Barleywine we’ve gotten from Junkyard, and its rich, silky complexity reveals just how masterful they are with the dark style. They aged this beauty for 6 months in top shelf Willett Rye Whiskey barrels, so every sip positively drips with dark fruit, clove, and orange zest flavors coated in caramel. On the finish, discover an oaky vanilla kiss.

Big Booze! There’s a rising warmth between the decadent array of raisin and fig notes, and it’s from the 12.1% ABV. Did we mention that it comes in a supersized 750ml bottle, too?

Big Following! Junkyard is the top-rated brewery in the Fargo-Moorehead area on Yelp, and they’re so esteemed that fans frequently make the 3.5-hour trek over from Minneapolis. Craft sipper @Josh C. lays down why: “Straight to the point — Junkyard is wonderful.”

Ready to foray into some Basement Business? We only have 300 bottles to go around — time to go big or go home!

Quite lovely. Unusual for a barleywine, it's not extraordinarily malty. Spice notes, lots of rye whiskey in the mouth, and quite boozy, all wrapped up in a surprisingly creamy mouth feel from lively carbonation but really small bubbles. More dark fruit comes out as it warms in the glass.

Nice and boozy can definitely taste the rye should have aged it for a bit though

This is as*almost* as sweet and refreshing as a Trappistes Rochefort 10, although it has some bitterness not present in that Belgian ale. It's still very drinkable, though.

Good barely. Don’t taste any barrel but very good barley.

This is everything I love about a Barley wine...with just a little funk. Great job on this one.

Definitely not a bad beer...different than what I am used to and/or want in a stout. Tasted more like a rye with a hint of stout. That might rock for some, but not my deal! Definitely added extra hair to chest.
