Sibling rivalry is a fact of life. No matter how well we get along now, growing up with brothers and sisters means competition to be the best.

When the siblings in question also happen to be two of the best brewers in the world, the rivalry pays off in some really delicious beer.

Danish brothers Jeppe Jarnit-Bjergsø, of Evil Twin Brewing, and Mikkel Borg Bjergsø, the brewer behind Mikkeller, are constantly try to out-do each other. Their competition has created two of the most exclusive, most revered gypsy breweries in the world.

Mikkel started commercially brewing in 2006, when he released his first “Beer Geek Breakfast” stout. Later that year, the beer was named the best stout of the year by RateBeer members.

He has been perfecting the style ever since. We just got our hands on this year’s edition, Beer Geek BreAKfast Stout, brewed at Anchorage Brewing Company, Alaska.

This version of the Breakfast Stout was brewed with coffee, and pours the color of dark Italian roast. Smooth, roasted, and full of rich coffee flavors, this stout has none of the cloying sweetness that can plague other coffee beers. The finish lingers with lightly bitter coffee taste, with noticeable undercurrents of dark chocolate and roasted malt. With a multifaceted, comforting flavor, Mikkeller’s stout combines two familiar flavors to create an elevated stout and invigorate the senses.

Made with the highest quality ingredients and exacting focus, Beer Geek Breakfast Stout is what Mikkeller Brewing is all about. With this version, Mikkel’s twin brother over at Evil Twin has a lot to live up to.

One of the rarest beers from Mikkeller, BreAKfast Stout was brewed only once, just a month ago, and is still unrated. Based on the world-class ratings of Mikkeller’s previous Breakfast Stouts, we’d be surprised if this beer wasn’t a hit.  


P.S. We happened to be devouring a box of Girl Scout cookies while tasting this beer. In our opinion, Thin Mints and BreAKfast Stout are a match made in heaven.
