A Note on This Beer
Alright Dark Beer lovers, get ready to go gaga because today we’ve got a 13% ABV Bordeaux Wine Barrel-Aged monster: Black Damnation XXVI - Froggie Imperial Stout!
If you’re all about ludicrously massive Stouts (and you follow the European beer scene) you might already know about Belgium’s De Struise Brouwers, even though their stuff usually can’t be had without flying to Europe. You may have even heard of their celebrated Black Damnation series.
These brews are so beloved that all the previous versions on BeerAdvocate have an average score of 4.16!
That’s a fantastic rating for any beer, but as an average across an entire series it’s downright bonkers! And today’s Bordeaux Wine Barrel-Aged version is right at the top of the heap with a massive 4.28 on UT.
Add a bottle of this to your cellar and Dark Beer fans across the globe will envy you. If you know a Belgian Beer snob that you’d like to absolutely blow out of the water at your next bottle share, here’s the brew to do it. Show up with this monster and it’ll be the talk of the night.
As soon as you pop the top, vinous notes from aging in famed Bordeaux Wine Barrels spring from the pour, mingling with notes of dark chocolate, brandy, and candied dates. Take a sip and the super-smooth brew washes across the palate, carrying light nuttiness and nuances of oak, vanilla, and a hint of char, all swimming through the fruity body.
Outside of a handful of specially imported bottles, none of this absurdly drinkable high ABV brew is making its way Stateside. Pick up a bottle of Black Damnation XXVI and show all your buds that Europe can do seriousl Imperial Stouts, too.
Rated 4.28 on Untappd; 4.36 on BeerAdvocate by a lucky few tasters.
