A Note on This Beer

Today’s Blacklight Black Lager is no ordinary Lager.

To start, it’s really a Schwarzbier, with a midnight pour and roasty coffee notes from specialty dark malts. And, it’s not just any Schwarzbier — the brewers at Block 15 amped it up with German Hops for whispers of dried apricot and plum alongside a gentle kick of floral bitterness.

Then, they took things even further with extended cold conditioning! This process smoothed out the brew’s roasty malt flavors and brought in nuances of toasted almonds and dark chocolate.

It’s like a refreshing dessert — mocha flavors topped with a sprinkling of nuts and dried fruit, wrapped in a smooth, very drinkable body!

Though, unless you happen to be in the Pacific Northwest — ideally at Block 15’s brewery in scenic Corvallis, Oregon — stocking up the fridge with this special Lager is going to be tough. Limited releases like Blacklight are super tough to come by outside the region!

In fact, this is the first-ever Lager of any style we’ve been able to sneak out of Block 15’s taproom. And that makes it even more extraordinary.

*Block 15 just nabbed another Great American Beer Festival medal to add to their trophy case of awards.

Black Lagers are always a great change and not as common as they should be. This was a great example of how good they are.

The can art was cool.. But I'm going to be polite and hold back on my comments about what it tasted like.. Sorry.. Not a fan.

Not bad for a dark beer, reminds me of Guinness draught. Very smooth for a dark beer as well, it didn’t have much of a bite whatsoever

Kind of boring. Not a lot of taste, slight fruit finish, but that's it. Drinkable but not overly exciting.

Beer appears dark, but has a definite berry/fruity flavor. Not sure if this was intended or if this soured in the can.

Roasty flavors are muted, notes of tart dried fruit are amplified. Not a traditional Schwarzbier, still delicious.

Huge Schwarzbier fan, love dark beers that are light and thin. In saying that though.... this was not like any Schwarz I've ever had. Color looked good, flavor was way off, almost like the beer had gone sour. Thin head that dissipated quickly and off smell. I double checked the date and still good there. If this had been bottled, I would have sworn it sat in direct sunlight for a month. Wonder if it was chilled, got really hot and then rechilled..... Loved the can and artwork, loved the concept but the beer wasn't drinkable.

I had high hopes, but this just tasted metallic and bad. Happy to see others agreed and it wasn’t just me. Poured the rest down the drain.

Super smooth, coffee notes are not overwhelming...a little heavy on the floral notes for my pallet but it did help round out the beer

There’s a distinct flavor on the finish – sour and sweet and just a bit savory – that reminds me of tamarind, which is not something I enjoy.

This tasted more like a sour to me than a lager. I'm not a big sour fan and ended up having to dump it (and I hate wasting beer). I checked to see if the beer was spoiled, but it was inconclusive with a "packaged date 10/15" I was left unsure if it was packaged 10/15/20 or October 2015.

TAVOUR NEEDS TO REFUND EVERYONE... THEY SENT THIS BEER TOO!!! ... this was part of my picked subscription beers and it’s gone bad in the can ... I feel bad for block for this just is going to give them bad ratings which just hurts the brewery
