A Note on This Beer
Tailor-made for aging, today’s Bourbon Barrel-Aged Porter will develop even more layers of maple and molasses complexity with time -- if craft fans don’t drink it all first! If it were up to Alewerks’ devout Virginia fanbase, nary a drop would escape state lines, let alone make it into your cellar.
The brewery’s inspired use of unrefined Haitian Rapadou sugar and Virginia Gentleman Bourbon Barrels soak BBP in decadent molasses depth. Its notes of rich caramel, chocolate-dipped cherries, and oaky vanilla are earning it a towering 4.27 from the BA community. But there’s not nearly enough to go around -- admirers are scrambling to get a taste of this limited-release vintage with only 324 cases in existence!
BBP devotees will urge you to age an extra bottle of the 2018 vintage to taste how the flavors evolve over time. Even unsuspecting craft fans have become passionate connoisseurs after discovering the complexities of this dark delight. Each excavation brings smooth waves toffee and silky bourbon character; the 9% ABV wraps the palate in a sweet, warm embrace.
One fan puts it this way: “1 year aged is incredible. Very few barrel-aged beers hold up nearly as well as this deliciousness. Bourbon and wood somehow got more pronounced while the smoky characteristics of the porter died away.”
Once you crack open your own cellared bottle, in one year or five, you’ll luxuriate in the evolved flavors too. And you’ll barely remember how your craft life could have existed before BBP.
