A Note on This Beer

If you’re the kind of craft fan who’s always in search of new breweries, new flavors, and distinctive styles, you’ll want to pay attention. Today, we’ve got our very first beer from North Carolina’s Fonta Flora Brewery.

Beers from this crew rarely leave the state, but you still might’ve heard of them — it seems like the entire craft beer universe is head over heels for Fonta Flora!

  • Craft Beer & Brewing named them a Breakout Brewer.
  • They’re one of Thrillist’s 32 Hottest Breweries in America!
  • Their beers have made ‘Best Of’ lists on Bloomberg, Gear Patrol, Hop Culture, and Forbes, just to name a few.

These brewers made a name for themselves by crafting interesting styles with unique, locally sourced ingredients, and today’s Bread Tree Chestnut Brown Ale is no exception.

Chestnuts used to be HUGE in the region. In fact, one out of every 4 trees in Appalachia was a chestnut before they were devastated by blight. Now, the trees are making a comeback, and Fonta Flora celebrates the return each year with this winter release!

Every sip overflows with flavors of toffee and caramel, punctuated with notes of locally harvested, house-roasted chestnuts! It’s basically a delicious tin of nut brittle, but with a cheek-warming 5.8% ABV!

If you’re looking for a brew that’ll take your tastebuds on an adventure, this Brown Ale checks all the boxes! Bread Tree highlights a rarely seen ingredient, it’s a style we barely ever get to share, and it comes from a celebrated brewery that you’ll be hard pressed to find anywhere else. Time to try something new!

With Tavour, it's easy to beer it forward! Just head over to Tavour.com/gifts to send a gift box or gift card to the craft beer lover in your life. Cheers!

Very very good! I wish I had bought a case instead of just one. Smooth and roasty with the perfect brown ale mouth feel. Not too thick, not too thin. The chestnut flavor is delicious without being overpowering. Love this!!!

We got this one from Tavour. Chilled for a while and poured into an imperial pint glass. Look: dark brown hue with a finger sized tan head that dissipated quickly and left a tan ring, leaving a very faint lacing that didn’t hang around very long. Smell: breads, a little nutty, hints of pine. Taste: breads up front, sweetness and a bit of roasted chestnut that died away leaving breads brown roast. Feel: light body, light tickle of carbonation. Overall this is a solid bready brown ale. We were not sure about the chestnut notes and overall doesn’t really make a presence. If you like sweet, bready brown ales this is not bad, but as far as a nutty ale, not so much. Cheers everyone!

Not what I expected but still good. Probably won’t buy again but maybe another nut would be good

Solid brown ale. Weirdly bitter at the start but then it was fine. I don't think chestnuts really have that much of a taste

A reasonable, basic brown ale with some chocolate and nut notes. There's a rather strong tannin-y flavor, especially once the beer warms a bit, that's a bit astringent and peculiar.

A really unique nut brown ale. Can't say I've ever had one with chestnuts before. It's pretty flavorful and smooth and pours much darker than picture, almost black.
