A Note on This Beer
“Seek out any new Barrel Culture beers and keep an eye on the Durham brewery!” –Hop Culture
That’s some great advice, because this North Carolina brewery crafts some of the finest brews in the region. And today, you can sample not just one, but 5 of their celebrated Wild and Sour Ales!
You’ll have to be quicker than quick to snag them — we have just 60 bottles of each!
Cedar Grove Sour Ale - 5.7% ABV
Way back in 2019, the Barrel Culture team made a wort with nothing but local barley and wheat, and then drove it over to their friends at Botanist and Barrel. There, the unfinished brew sat uncovered next to the blueberry fields overnight, to be inoculated by natural, wild yeasts.
Then, they added 100s of pounds of blueberries from that very same farm!
Herbal notes on the sip balance against plenty of berry sweetness, with a touch of tart and funky flavor on the back end. If you can’t actually visit a blueberry farm, this is the next best thing!
Erosion Theories: Strawberry Lemon Wile Ale - 5.3% ABV
To make this tart yet refreshing brew, the Barrel Culture crew crafted a tart and slightly funky Wild Ale with their house Saison yeast, then let it referment on plenty of real strawberries and lemons!
The result tastes like a cool glass of strawberry lemonade on a warm spring day! It’s got plenty of pucker, but finishes crisp, with just a touch of wild, grassy funk at the end.
Erosion Theories: Cherry Plum Wild Ale - 5.2% ABV
This wild treat starts with the same Saison yeast as its partner, but the brewers amp up the stone fruit notes by refrementing the beer on a bounty of cherries and plums.
Bright, fresh cherry flavor bounces through every sip, with deeper, background notes of juicy plum that become more pronounced towards the finish. It’s a bit tart and a whole lot refreshing!
Full Mookie Wild Ale - 4.5% ABV
For this one, the Barrel Culture crew teamed up with their pals at Tripping Animals — the team that Hop Culture called ‘Florida’s Hottest New Brewery’ just last year!
Together, they blended several of BC’s oak-aged ales into a woody, slightly funky base beer, then added apricots, plums, and a pile of Madagascar vanilla beans. A dose of Florida orange blossom honey adds a touch of sweetness that seems to elevate the fruit. It’s almost creamy towards the end, with a finish that one fan describes as ‘sorta like a marshmallow!”
Boy Howdy Wild Ale - 4.5% ABV
This brew is loaded with blood oranges and pomegranates and aged in Tequila barrels — it’s like an upscale version of a classic Tequila Sunrise cocktail! Tart orange dominates the sip, until the pomegranate swoops in to sweeten things up.
To make it, BC teamed up with their fellow North Carolina craft masters at Asheville’s DSSOLVR — one of USA Today’s 10 Best New Breweries of 2020!
If you haven’t tried a beer from Barrel Culture yet, here’s your chance to explore their Wild and Sour expertise. All you have to do is be among the first 60 people to hit ‘Get it!’
