A Note on This Beer

I’m a sucker for spiced-up chocolate — and I don’t mean basic Swiss Miss with a sprinkle of pepper. I’m talking real, South-of-the-border-style dark chocolate that kicks deliciously with chili heat and cinnamon!

I’m talking about today’s Chili Chocolate Avarice, a delectably dry Imperial Stout with waves of spiced heat that flow into deep, dark fudge. Of course it satisfies the craving — it contains hefty amounts of real chilis and cacao!

It’s like fine Mexican hot cocoa, only even finer because it’s wrapped in a 9.6% ABV!

There are three ways to enjoy this beauty from River North:

  • If you’re like me and like your chocolate HOT, you’re gonna want to open this fiery dark beast right away.
  • If you’re like my buddy Tom and prefer your mocha mellow, just cellar it for a bit to let the heat soften over time.
  • If you’re like my friend Karen and love chocolatey brews every way you can get them, get two bottles and try it both ways!

Oh, and if you’ve never heard of River North, that’s because their beers hardly ever leave Colorado. But they’re a must-try for Dark Beer lovers — they nabbed First Place in Paste Magazine’s ‘Top Imperial Stouts in the Nation’ Blind Tasting!

So whether you drink Chili Chocolate Avarice now or save a bottle for later, don’t be surprised when you find yourself echoing @Colin S. on Untappd:

“I'm a sucker for chili beers and this one kicks a$#!”

Rich mocha and bourbon aromatics are followed by strong dark espresso notes and a big wave of peppery heat! Almost too much for me, but I know better. Not my first picnic with pepper beer lol this one mellowed in the cellar for almost two years before I brought it out to begin the festivities! It was the right call too! This one packs plenty of heat! 😁🍻 ⭐⭐⭐💫💫

The chili pepper is too strong and overpowering, in my opinion. A more subtle flavor would have allowed the other flavors like the chocolate to shine through. There are better styles like this out there.

Really enjoyed this. Plenty of dark malts provide a smooth base for the chocolate and chilies. Just enough chili to taste and feel without overwhelming a great stout.

The chili is the first thing you taste. it’s also the last thing you taste with only subtle notes of chocolate.
