The best thing about visiting my cousin in the Caribbean is drinking her famous rum cocktails every evening. Don’t get me wrong – she’s fun and snorkeling is pretty great, but the woman’s cinnamon spiked rummy is a cut above.
Sipping on River North’s Cinnamon Vanilla Rum Barrel Aged Mr. Sandman is like being transported to an island with warm nights, cool breezes, and the distant sounds of a steel-drum band.

The backbone of this brew is the original Mr. Sandman, an Imperial Stout layered with flavors of roasty malt, bitter cocoa, rich molasses, ripe cherry, and a hint of coffee. The brewers then aged it in South American rum barrels with Madagascar vanilla and Indonesian korintje cinnamon, imparting extra layers of complexity.
What you get is like a taste of my cousin’s signature cocktail: a rush of cinnamon on the nose, complemented by oaky vanilla on the palate, and finishing with a sweet booziness you’ll want to savor.
