A Note on This Beer

When Hershey’s introduced the Mounds candy bar in 1920, it came with the slogan, “Indescribably Delicious.”

A hundred years later, and it’s still a fitting description for all treats chocolate-coated and coconut-filled. Like today’s Coco Van Imperial Stout!

This dark delicacy tastes like if you took a bunch of toasted coconuts and swirled them in with enough chocolatey dark malts to put Willy Wonka out of business.

Which is what the Dark Beer masterminds at Hubbard’s Cave did, only they went the extra mile and added a hefty dose of vanilla beans for extra scrumptious sweetness. Then, they wrapped this liquid dessert in a boozy 12% ABV!

Send me a message if you can find a better way to describe the deliciousness in this mocha-macaroon behemoth. In the meantime, load up now — because unlike candy bars, Hubbard’s Cave treats are limited creations.

*Forbes named Hubbard’s Cave one of the Best Breweries in Chicago!

Pretty damn tasty but a tad too sweet for me. Maybe needed a little more time to slumber? Better than a 4 but not a 4.25. Solid 4.15

Decent pastry showing, very sweet without being overwhelming. The vanilla is front and center here, the coconut is barely noticeable, but still a really solid pastry base

Very good!! Super malty. Head comes up after being poured. Rich notes of molasses. Definitely a sweet stout.

Cloyingly sweet. Artificial vanilla lingers on the palette. Could not finish.

If they toned down the sweetness it would be world class, good dessert beer.

Very smooth with a great flavor yet not too sweet. Did not notice the coconut as much as expected. Loved it wish I bought more

Chilled and poured into a goblet from a 16 ounce can. Look: dark, almost black, small head little to no lacing. Smell: boozy a bit on the nose with roasted coconut, trace chocolate and vanilla Taste: sweet on the front, dark roast, sweet roasted coconut, trailing vanilla and hints of chocolate on the back end. Not at all hoppy. The sweetness, coconut and chocolate malts hide the 12% ABV very well. Feel: medium to full body, light tickle of carbonation If you read our reviews you know we love dark beers. This one was sweet, chocolatey and vanilla(y). The toasted coconut hides itself in the vanilla and chocolate . The title "Coco van" fits well. It is coco and for a 12%, we loved it.
