A Note on This Beer

Prairie’s latest Pastry Sour, Cocoa Berry, has a super fruity, cacao-swirled complexity that keeps craft fans entranced:

  • @Stephen B. loves the flavor notes: “Citrus fruit and berries mixed w/ chocolate and marshmallow, so good!!!”
  • @Mario C. says it’s just straight-up, “Phenomenal!”
  • And, for @Josh M., this brew cements the fact that, “Everything Prairie makes is good!”

The brewers created Cocoa Berry with a jammy blend of raspberries and blueberries, and a hint of sunny grapefruit zest for bright, sun-ripened, fresh fruit flavors. Layers of toasted marshmallows add a touch of caramelized creaminess. But, it’s the cacao nibs that truly surprise and delight the tastebuds with a hint of cocoa richness.

Cocoa Berry is just the kind of innovative, “boundary-pushing” Sour that earned Prairie Artisan Ales a ‘Breakout Brewer’ title from Craft Beer & Brewing — it tastes just like a fresh fruit meringue, garnished with a dollop of whipped cream, and topped with fine dark chocolate shavings!

If you want to find out why so many sippers are coocoo for Prairie’s Cocoa berry, you’ll have to snag your cans before they disappear!

*Thrilist says Prairie Artisan Ales currently makes some of the Best Beer in Oklahoma!

This was delicious. It smelled lightly of cocoa pebbles milk, tasted right away of sour berry, with the cocoa coming in at the end. It was surprisingly light and bubbly. Would definitely buy again.

Excellent Sour ! You get the fruit right off the bat and the tart, but the Cocoa blends and complements everything very well. On my watch list now !

The fruit hits you up front and the cocoa comes right after with a sweet and full finish. Absolutely something I would get again for a sweeter beer!

Look: Pours a deep ruby red, almost like red wine, with a small ring of foam around the edge. No head and no lacing. Smell: Smells fruity, like berry juice or candied dried fruit, followed by some chocolate notes and a little marshmallow. Smells delicious! Taste: Taste follows the smell. Light sour up front, fruity (not sure we get all the fruit they list, no lime, no lemon and grapefruit is a stretch... orange is there, raspberry and blueberry are the bulk of the flavor), trailing notes of cocoa, then far trailing marshmallow that go on for a while. No booze (7.9) and no hop presence. Feel: Light and refreshing, light tickle of carbonation that doesn’t hang out while the beer warms. Prairie is always an interesting beverage... we got this one because of the fruity coco vibe they describe and this beer is exactly as described minus the differentiation of the lime and lemon. The coco and raspberry/blueberry mix is interesting (chocolate covered fruit flavors). A lot of the Prairie beers are boozy, but this one was light and refreshing. Cheers everyone.

This is just plain odd. I mean it tastes EXACTLY like they said it would. The flavor is so much like a chocolate/raspberry pastry it’s unreal. I ain’t mad at it

Smells like a chocolate raspberry torte. Sour, bright and sweet with a bit of marshmallow and chocolate. This one is weird and complex and I really like it.

Wiley amazing. Cocoa nibs were heavy in the aftertaste and this is a must next time it comes around.

I don’t know what magic Prairie is doing behind the scenes, but it works. Another amazing sour.

I rated this based on how well they executed what they wanted to do, according to the name of the beer. Pretty spot on imo. For my taste though, while I LOVE chocolate, especially in a stout, I’m not a fan of it in a sour. If you think you might be, give it a shot, Prairie doesn’t make bad beer.

In the end, this all melds into something that tastes bitter, but sour, where the chocolate overrides any berry flavor peeking through.

Decent beer overall, but not great. Too many flavors to distinguish between each. And the cocoa seems a bit lost.

You would think with the long list of flavors of this beer that it wouldn't be good, but it's surprisingly good. Each flavor (the fruit, the cacao nibs, and the marshmallow) hits at a different time while you're drinking it
