A Note on This Beer
“Please pass the mole sauce!”
I can still remember my brother shouting that from across the table at a Mexican restaurant, three years ago. He pronounced it “mole” like the animal, instead of “mo-lay,” and I could feel my cheeks burning as our credibility with the waiters seeped away like water through a sieve.
Unlike my family, Hubbard’s Cave’s Imperial Stout credibility is only rising with each year’s edition of Coffee El Zacaton. This mole-inspired brew overflows with layers of freshly brewed coffee and cinnamon, followed by subtle waves of velvety vanilla. A spicy chocolate aftertaste lingers on the palate, inviting you to indulge in another scintillating sip.
To brew it, the craft confectioners stuffed this 12% ABV powerhouse with chocolate, cinnamon, vanilla beans, and three types of chiles: ancho, guajillo, and habanero. Ancho chiles give this brew a warm and inviting smokiness, while habaneros bring the heat and guajillos add a hint of fruity tang.
As if those adjuncts weren’t intriguing enough, Hubbard’s Cave also used almond flour to add richness to the body, fermented it on toasted oak, and allowed it to rest on Mexican Chiapas coffee beans.
You won't find this Mexican-inspired magic outside of Illinois. So, if your tastebuds are tingling, it’s time to shout, “Please pass the Coffee El Zacaton!”
