A Note on This Beer

Fremont’s Bourbon Barrel Aged Dark Star Stout is world-renowned.

It’s the 4th highest rated Oatmeal Stout on the planet according to BeerAdvocate. It was also crowned the #1, “epitome” of the Stout style when it beat out 144 other contenders in Paste Mag’s BA Stout Blind Taste Test.

Not to mention, all of you discerning crafties on Tavour rate every version we’ve nabbed at least a 4.56!

This is THE Stout that keeps Dark Beer fans clamoring for every annual release. And today, you can snag not one, not two, but three different vintages in one coveted bundle: 2017, 2018, and 2020!

Each vintage is a blend of 24, 18, 12, and 8-month Bourbon Barrel-Aged Dark Stars aged in 7-12-year old Kentucky Bourbon barrels. Fremont then cellared the bottles, allowing the sumptuous elixirs to mellow and form additional complexity. They’ve unlocked the vault, and now we get to taste all this barrel-aged deliciousness for ourselves!

No matter which bottle you choose to open first, you’ll be greeted with aromas and flavors of melty cocoa, roasty coffee, and warm whiskey from the BA Stout bases.

Each vintage holds varying degrees of luxurious vanilla, earthy oak, and sultry caramel notes. The sweet heat of the Bourbon-soaked Imperial ABV will also be more or less pronounced depending on the age.

No two vintages are the same, so you’ll get a chance to discover the subtle nuances for yourself!

With three BA Dark Stars in your possession, don’t be surprised if your crafty friends start lingering around your cellar, dropping hints about how thirsty they are. You could host the event of the year, a BBADS vintage tasting party! Or, enjoy a bottle all to yourself and cellar the rest for future celebrations. If you snag this trio, you’ll have plenty of options!

Great base beer, but it's hard to rate high when you have tried the barrel aged version

It was good…don’t get me wrong. I think though, I expected somewhat more from a big brew with such a reputation. Five year old aged, oldest one I’ve ever had, and it seems very subtle. Maybe that’s just the aging. A bit thin, but nice flavor profile, nothing to loud and well balanced.

Really like this beer. Great sipper. Not sure why someone would give it 1 star without an explanation. I’m beginning to really love all the Fremont releases.

For those who like a little burn of bourbon. This is the stuff! It is very smooth for such a high abv. Great to share with others!

Dipping into the cellar after a long week. A little more charred oak and roasty malt in this release. Brings a different, but still well balanced look. Chocolate and a subtle sweetness brings balance.

Good bourbon barrel aging on the roasty malts of the stout base. Flavor blossomed as the beer warmed slightly.
