A Note on This Beer

One glance at today’s 17% ABV, Double Cinnamon Double Avarice (2020), and you might be asking, “Have the River North brewers finally gone too far? Has their thirst for Imperial Stouts with knock-your-socks-off ABVs and powerful flavors clouded their judgment?”

Rest assured — these guys know what they’re doing.

Their original Barrel Aged Double Avarice packed such a colossal ABV, the brewers quipped, “What have we done?!” But, the 4.41 ratings were clear: they hadn’t created a monster, they’d created a legacy.

For today’s amped-up version, they took the recipe for their legendary Imperial Stout and added two dozen sticks of Ceylon and Cassia cinnamon per barrel. It tastes like a decadent, chocolate molten cake with a dollop of cinnamon dusted whipped cream on top.

I double-dog dare you to take on Double Cinnamon Double Avarice! Be careful though, this boozy behemoth sneaks up on you quieter than a lion stalking its prey.

If it sounds a little too hot to handle, cellar a bottle to share with your boldest friends in the future. The robust kick will mellow over time for silky smooth drinking.

This beer is too new for ratings!

Expected a little more from this one. The cinnamon was there but the true stout flavor was missing.

It's a good stout, cinnamon was almost overpowering, and at 17% ABV it's a time commitment to get down.

Not a lot of cinnamon, although more came out as it warmed in the glass. Notes of molasses and a bit of hop sharpness. More of a Russian stout than a pastry stout.
