I really should stop coming to work hungry. My stomach is already growling at the thought of today’s delicious Cream Ale from 903 Brewers: Strawberry Cake.

It’s inspired by the famous strawberry cakes from Mom’s Bakery, one of Texas’ best kept secrets. The GABF award-winning team bakes their drinkable version with oats, lactose, vanilla beans, and 420 lbs of strawberry purée per batch!

Each sip of this smooth, creamy beer is like biting into a moist slice of strawberry cake dipped in vanilla frosting.

Normally, 903’s decadently original beers don’t leave the Lone Star State, but you CAN score a little sweetness right here at Tavour!

Strawberry builds on this with every sip. And brewed to celebrate women is a bonus. I enjoyed it for a cream ale, and the fruit doesn’t overpower. I’ll go to a fruit sour to get more fruit flavor.

It's not a bad beer, but it's definitely not what I expected. I was definitely hoping for more of the flavors it claims, but was met with a pretty underwhelming sip. Wanted strawberry shortcake deliciousness, got barely detectable fruit and cream notes. Pretty disappointed, after having bought several cans out of excitement. It won't go to waste, but I'll be sipping this one with a bit of a frown.

Very nice aroma. Unfortunately the flavors disappoint. A cream ale is the absolute wrong style to really get the flavors advertised (strawberry shortcake). Although there is a discernible taste of cream ale, the pastry part is very poorly executed. The cream ale style for fermentation reduces overall fruitiness, yielding a more bitter strawberry taste and more fermented alcohol flavors. The strawberries end up tasting like a mix of underripe and almost rotten (perhaps over fermented) all at once and distinctly vegetal as well (like strawberry leaves were left in the process). Strawberry seeds were left as part of the sediment (which I don’t normally mind), leaving a very bitter final gulp. No real richness, so I got no interpretation of a shortcake whatsoever. Since there was no lactose, there wasn’t any creaminess at all. The cream ale style doesn’t yield that; it’s moreso a marketing tool to denote it is a easier drinking beer. This would have worked best as a fruited sour or Berliner Weisse with lactose, but ultimately it wasn’t. I enjoy the can art, but not much else from this beer.
