A Note on This Beer
When doing a vertical tasting of two vintages, side-by-side, it’s important to note the difference that cellaring has made in the older one.
With this tasting from pFriem — the team that The Beer Connoisseur named “Best Brewery of All Time” — you’ll notice several distinct characteristics between the cherry-laden Flanders Red Sour 2019 and the 2020 vintage.
In the 2020 edition, your taste buds will delight in bright cherries, sweet tobacco, vinous tartness, and woody notes that come from 18 months of aging in French Oak Pinot Noir Barrels.
However, an extra year in the bottle makes the 2019 edition more tart and complex. It offers your palate flavors of oaky red grapes, sour raspberries, balsamic vinaigrette, and a dry, Bretty, wild funk on the finish.
Both Sours are delicious. But, after a thorough tasting of each bottle, you’re sure to learn which vintage suits you best, as well as what to look for when purchasing older or younger bottles in the future.
