A Note on This Beer

Fresh IIPA V49 marks the first time I’ve tasted Styrian Dragon and Styrian Wolf Hops in ANY beer!

Yes, these hops sound like they belong to the families on Game of Thrones. They’re actually very new — and very rare — Slovenian varieties with some pretty epic floral and berry flavors, punctuated with notes of tropical citrus.

To deepen the complexity even further, the Hubbard’s Cave crew brewed the Styrian varieties alongside a helping of Simcoe Hops. And, wow! The result is a very smooth IIPA that spills grapefruit-rose aromas and flows with red berry, tangerine, and fresh pine flavors. It finishes with a cleansing, delectable bitterness that leaves you wanting more.

Like all of their Fresh IIPA releases though, this one is a limited run only. Once it’s all gone, I know I — for one — will always be thankful for my first foray into the flavorful world of Styrian Hops.

Chicago Tribune calls out the Fresh IIPA series as some of the Best Hazy IPAs in the region!

Refreshing, light, tiniest bit sweet, and packs a flavor punch.

Dank as hell. Think dark and stormy night in a noir film, set in some angsty urban metropolis, or like grapefruit in a cooler made of turkish carpets for ten years.

Very crisp with a pretty good flavor. Nothing that makes it stand out as a front runner, but definitely not bad in any way, shape, or form.

Decent hop burst that quickly sours into a broken malt profile

Definite floral notes. I didn't taste them as much with the first can, but with the 2nd can a couple weeks later, it was very apparent.

There is definitely a berry note to this brew, but it doesn’t mesh all that well with the bitter finish. Still quite good and interesting

I agree I have not tasted the new type of hopes in this beer. Didn’t have same juiciness as most NEIPA’s but definitely enjoyed something out of the ordinary.

The color was so off putting I couldn’t enjoy it. It was brown.
