A Note on This Beer
Today’s lesson: why the Wheatwine blows the Barleywine out of the water when it comes to pastry time.
A Wheatwine is like a Barleywine except lighter in color and body, less aggressively hopped, and thus less bitter. AND THUS, it’s a wonderful playground for the Dark Beer barons at Mikkeller and Horus to transform into the dessert beer dreams are made of!
Their Friends of Prey Pastry Wheatwine is ridiculously delicious. To make it, the breweries teamed up and added cocoa nibs, vanilla, peanut butter powder, and coffee.
I can only imagine the tears Starbucks die-hards would weep if they got to try it. But, at this point, only the brewers got a taste. Then, they decided they needed to crank it up to never-before-charted-levels of complex indulgence.
So, they aged this 17.2% ABV dessertopia in Bourbon, Brandy, and Mead barrels!
Watching a sweet-toothed beer geek sip Friends of Prey is like seeing the wide-eyed grin of a toddler who just took their first taste of an ice cream sundae with all the toppings.
