A Note on This Beer
Drake’s aged Headzo IV (2020) for 2 whole years in Kentucky Bourbon AND Port Barrels!
The brewery calls it a Strong Ale, because what else would you call a boozy 18.5% ABV kaleidoscope like this?
To even begin to appreciate the beyond-barleywine-type complexities of Headzo, you’ll need to take things extremely slow.
You could try sniffing its aromas of deep molasses and dark fruit like a cicerone, and cover the top of your glass with your hand as you swirl the golden brown liquid. Bring your nose to the glass before lifting your palm, and take a strong inhale. You’ll be rewarded with the subtle notes of dark roasted coffee and peanut brittle toffee.
If you sip it with the same dedicated patience, the flavor follows the nose with ribbons of burnt caramel, figs, and rich vanilla that fade to a soft warmth.
Headzo makes a wonderful introduction to these BIG ABV brewers from the Bay Area. We definitely recommend getting familiar with these GABF multi-medalists — especially for any of you who are into top-shelf cocktails or smooth, slow-sipping beers.
Being tight with cool breweries like this one has its perks: you’re getting access to this bad boy even before most of the limited specialty bottleshops in their area!
*Drink Headzo fresh to experience its full 18.5% ABV punch — or cellar it for up to a year to mellow the boozy heat and taste refined caramelized date and bourbon-vanilla notes.
