It’s Island Time! The GABF gold medalists at Masthead Brewing are giving pepper heads another chance to get spicy with this complex chili beer that’s earned itself a bit of a cult following.
Masthead’s nod to classic Caribbean ingredients imbues this brew with cacao nibs, coconut, and Scotch bonnet peppers. Vanilla beans and lactose boost the creaminess factor, and aging in bourbon barrels adds up to a distinctively enticing Imperial Stout.
Tasting Notes
It’s as dark as night over the ocean. Waves of cocoa on the nose crash over roasty malt, velvety coconut, and ripples of chili, threaded through a moderately carbonated medium body.
In the sip, silky milk chocolate swims beside candylike coconut, oaky bourbon, and a touch of burnt toast, for a layered experience with a peppery heat that builds as you imbibe. It’s as smooth as a seashell, too, hiding a 13.4% ABV.
