About This Beer

King of Darkness is a small batch collab between Anchorage, who’s world-famous dark beers disappear almost as soon as they appear, and Side Project, the #13 Brewery in the World on Untappd!

This dream team started by brewing an immensely thick and rich Stout with a starting gravity of 43º Plato — that’s gotta be one of the densest beers we’ve ever seen! Then the brewers double oak aged the brew for two years: 8 months in just emptied Willet Bourbon Barrels and 16 months in Buffalo Trace Bourbon Barrels!

Tasting Notes

Enormous aromas of dates and cocoa covered raisins erupt out of every espresso-black pour. The sip follows the nose with complex nuances of a whole box of gourmet dark chocolate truffles served in opulent bourbon oak. Notes of whiskey caramel, cherry cordial, and coffee liquor course through every quaff.

This beer is good and you can taste the buffalo barrel aging, and boozy great flavors chocolate, worth the experience.

I cannot believe I’m leaving a 3.75 on an Anchorage/Side Project collab. I don’t even want my second bottle. It had so much potential with these heavy hitters, but maybe had infected nibs or a bad bottle? It was funky and sour. 11/13/21 BCBS Tasting.

Heavy barrel and oak, decent body. But a little much umami character… almost savory with a slight bitter and abrupt finish. Not bad but expected better.

Thick and black as oil. It got aromas of charred oak, bourbon, roasted malt and dark chocolate. Super complex flavors of bittersweet dark chocolate, roasted malt, coffee, leather, burnt sugar, caramel, dried fruit, vanilla, roasted nuts, charred oak and bourbon 🖤🤤 Warms you up with it’s 16% ABV. Mother of god, this is good!

I can see why this is a bit polarizing given the retail price point, but I love it. Reminds me of Aphotic & other Anchorage. Thick, very rich, smoky, toasted marshmallow, umami, some dark fruit, and a marked dryness from the barrel.

Nearly stained the glass it was so thick. Never seen drapes just stay in place before. Taste was very dense as well, cocoa, coffee and caramel, incredible depth. Need more!
