A Note on This Beer
As any true Maestro knows, creating a piece of art beautiful enough to lose oneself in is all about balance.
The crew at Black Project certainly understand the importance of balance when it comes to their complex Sour Ales. They’re such masters of the craft, they’re able to take flavors that might not seem compatible and unite them in delicious harmony.
In today’s beer, they used tart, tannic, slightly earthy hibiscus, alongside the bright, intensely fruity and berry-like notes of red currants. In Black Project’s skilled hands, these two ingredients unite to form something greater than the sum of the parts — a veritable symphony of flavors!
Not surprisingly, the bold currants reveal themselves first in a gush of bright fruit juice, like a ripe raspberry straight from the vine. Then, as the brew glides across the taste buds, a melody of subtle hibiscus slowly reveals itself. There’s a note of cranberry tartness, then a cascade of slightly bitter tannins that seem to temper the fruity flavors.
Finally, the complex Wild Ale base beer provides a slightly funky crescendo that resonates long after the sip.
Some people like to lose themselves in a symphony, others bask in the glow of an Impressionist painting. For me, a beautifully crafted beer is the height of fine art. If you’re lucky enough to snag one of these small batch cans, I’d recommend closing your eyes before taking that first sip — it might just sweep you off your feet.
