A Note on This Beer

As soon as I tasted today’s brew, I immediately thought of three of my best beer buddies. This crew is always on the lookout for two very specific, hard-to-find beer sub-styles: complex Lagers and crushable Saisons.

Boy, are they going to lose it when I tell them that Allagash combined the two in their Moselle!

Since it’s from the pioneers of American Farmhouse at Allagash, the first brewery to use a coolship in America, my friends won’t question whether or not this beer will be delicious — they’ll know it is!

Sipping on Moselle is like if Germany was slow dancing with Belgium on the peak of the picturesque Acadia National Park. It’s crisp and gently spiced, with some tropical fruit notes from the Saison yeast. Oh, and it’s way too easy to down the entire can in minutes.

The brewery recommends drinking this brew within 6-9 months. To that I say, “ha!” I’d like to see any of my buddies last 6-9 days without finishing an entire stash.

A very heavy flavorful lager. If you’re a fan of lagers you’ll most likely like this beer.

Easy drinking and crisp like a lager but with some farmhouse funk. If you like the funk you will like this eat drinking beer.

Great lager with a farmhouse funk. If all lagers were like this I’d be all in.

Clean, hint of bread in the flavor. If this came in a keg, I'd definitely tap it. What else would you expect from Allagash?!

Crisp lager. Subtle aroma and flavor of a saison or Belgian blonde ale.

This is the closest American beer I’ve found to Affligem. Which is my favorite beer I’ve ever had but isn’t so easy to get in the US. Thank you Allagash for this one!

This almost tastes like banana bread... but not quite. If your favorite loaf of banana bread took a trip to Germany and became a professional ski instructor, and maybe got a little arrogant as it learned to more deftly navigate the culture shift, perhaps a bit careless... maybe hitting the black diamond slopes with a degree of disregard for personal safety to the point that it eventually ends up in a tree, and I mean at the tip top of a tall, branchy bastard, ultimately concluding in an existential crisis for the ages whereby it chose to brew itself into a beer, well, you would have this. It’s great.

What would you expect from Allagash making a lager? A beautifully crafted Saison Belgian inspired lager, that’s what! Clean, refreshing with a bite of a Saison. Right on!

I was worried this would be like Allagash’s Truepenny Pilsner, which was less “farmhouse” than “barnyard.” Moselle lacks that funk; instead, it drinks like a very light, but still estery, Belgian blonde ale.

Very solid brew, but tasted more like an Octoberfest bier than a farmhouse saison... with an intensely nutty finish I really dig. Reminded me of drinking a bavarian beer while eating pretzels in Germany
