A Note on This Beer

North Carolina’s Casita Brewing may have just opened their doors in 2019, but this husband-and-wife duo are anything but newbies.

Ryan Witter-Merithew cut his teeth at breweries all over the globe, from Denmark to England, and of course, around the States. During his time in the UK, he actually had a stint as the head brewer at the world-famous Siren Craft Brew!

Then in 2014, he and the Siren crew made headlines when they collaborated with Sweden’s globally-renowned, and always-a-favorite, Omnipollo! The collaboration in question: Nacken.

6 years later, and that Nacken is backen— er,... it’s back!

After returning to the states, meeting his wife Mahalia, and honing both of their skills even further at the great Hill Farmstead, the two are reviving the recipe for this dearly cherished Hefeweizen.

Nacken is something like if a Hef and a Hazy IPA had a baby — Casita crafts it with Pilsner malt, wheat, and flaked oats, so it’s light and crisp, yet soft and fluffy. And then, they cram it with heaps of Simcoe, Amarillo, Citra, and Galaxy Hops, so every sip bangs with big, juicy flavors.

From the first gulp, there's a whirlwind of zesty citrus and sweet passionfruit flavors atop the bready malt backbone. It tastes like orange marmalade spread over baked crackers with a hibiscus spritz!

Finally, the beer nerds of America can get a taste of Nacken! And, with so many awesome breweries behind it, what a crying shame it would be to miss out now.

*Siren Craft Brew is a Champion Beer of Britain award-winning brewery!

*Food & Wine lists Omnipollo as one of the 15 Most Important Breweries in Europe!

This one is incredible. I don't go for hefeweizens and this stays interesting with every sip.

I don’t usually like hefeweizens but this one tastes more like hazy IPA. I’d buy again and definitely drink again.

Hopfenweizen is the perfect description for this beer! Creamy mouthfeel and dank, hoppy taste make for a really fabulous experience! Skoal!

Nice balance of two styles (hef/Pale Ale). Solid grain with solid citrus notes. Not bitter, and refreshing.

Starts Hefe, finishes IPA. Interesting combo and succeeds in highlighting each style.

Definitely a cross between a neipa and a hef, so more hops notes and full body.

Interesting style to try and pull off. I think they nailed what they were looking for, but landed in the middle of nowhere for me. Plus points for trying

I don’t think this should’ve been classified as a Hefeweizen. More ipa style. Enjoyable but a category issue for me. Reviewed on Twitch.tv/brewedforgaming

Tastes more like an IPA than a Hefeweizen, but with a bit of a weird hop profile
