A Note on This Beer

My grandma grew up in Bavaria, and she loves to tell me stories about “the old country.” Every year around Oktoberfest, she’ll start bumping CDs of oom-pah-pah music and singing along in her native ‘Bayerisch.’

And, if you put a beer in front of her, she’ll threaten to drink anyone under the table — even if it comes in one of those giant boots!

I’d like to dedicate today’s Oktoberfest from Pipeworks Brewing to Grandma — and all the Lager-lovin’ craft fans who know that every good story deserves a good beer.

Pipeworks brewed it in the traditional Marzen style, using Munich, Pilsner, and silky caramel malts. Hallertauer Mittelfrüher Hops give it that extra-Deutsche flavor.

The scent is a tantalizing aroma of freshly baked bread drizzled in honey — reminiscent of the family-owned bakeries that line the cobblestone streets of the Altstadt (Old Town) in Munich.

The taste is rich with nutty malts, balanced by notes of lemons, figs, freshly cut grass, and a whisper of spicy peppercorn on the finish. It’s robust and complex, with a subtle and welcoming sweetness.

After one sip, I had to call up Grandma and tell her I'm grabbing a few cans for us to share! I might skip out on the accordion music, but no way I’m skipping out on this delicious Lager — it only comes around once a year.

@Fbarber on BeerAdvocate raves, “I am once again favorably impressed by a Lager from Pipeworks. This is one of the best American versions of a Marzen I have come across.”

Daily Corona battle. German sausage on a college football Saturday edition. Nutty malty sweet, touch of earthiness balanced the delightful caramel biscuityness.

This was an excellent beer, not too sweet but still hitting those caramel notes the style is known for. I should’ve ordered more.
