A Note on This Beer
One of my fondest memories of my father involved spending an entire night by the fireplace, sipping bourbon, and delving into all things about our shared favorite liquor. From its history to our favorite distilleries, to old stories about him and his Navy buddies.
This year, I’m bringing him one of my favorite Bourbon Barrel Aged Scotch Ales in the hopes of stirring up a warm conversation even half as memorable as our last late-night chat.
Today’s coveted pour comes from Washington's Black Raven. This brewery is absolutely adorned in North American AND Washington Beer Award medals for their boozy barrel-aging skills!
The brewers aged Splinters (2020) for six months in single malt Westland Whiskey Barrels, melding together a warm bourbon spice with a dessert-like range of flavors. Nuances of Chocolate Malts sneak out from behind the spicy, liquor-soaked wood, turning every sip into a drizzle of milk chocolate infused with chewy dates and sticky toffee.
Splinters’ release reminds me that this is one of the few times a year when my dad and I can make time for each other. I should find a way to make it happen more often. But for now, this slow-sipping brew will help us make the most of the time we have.
