About This Beer

The team at Fonta Flora boiled the mash for this Doppelbock in an oak foeder. How do you boil something in a wooden vessel? The old-fashioned way!

The brewers actually collected granite rocks from a nearby quarry, heated them in a wood fire of local cherry and oak, and then dropped the glowing-hot stones into their mash of 100% locally harvested grains. Before metal mash tuns became the norm, this style of Steinbier — German for ‘stone bier’ — was common all over central Europe.

Tasting Notes

When a hot rock hits the mash, the very high temperature of the stone’s surface instantly caramelizes the sugars that it touches, resulting in a brew with massive flavors of toffee, creme brulee, and just a whisper of smoky char.

An extended cold Lagering process ensures a smooth, crisp, clean finish that you’ll want to sip all day — just watch out for that deceptive 8.1% ABV!

This doppelbock is right in my wheelhouse. Mild malty sweetness layered with a hint of smoke. Very smooth and full-bodied. Kudos to the brewers for offering a beer made using an old German brewing tradition.

Historical beer style, stein beer. Slightly caramel, strong yeast smell, kind of light. Not too much different than, say, an English pale ale

sweet and, dare I say, floral …? perhaps, the name of the brewery influenced my taste buds.

The gorgeously deep color fools my brain into thinking this beer won't taste as light as it does. Nicely balanced, the caramel is noticeable but doesn't dominate. Sip this one not just out of respect for the ABV, but also to pick up notes as it warms slightly. Will be on the lookout for more like this.

Malty rich and smooth with some definite sweetness. A touch boozy as well. Reminds me of the old Brimstone Stone Beer but just a bit stronger.

Sweeter doppelbock, very solid, but creme brulee and toffee weren't necessarily noticeable tasting notes

Beautiful copper red pour. Smallish bubbly tan head dissipates to a small ring. Sweet, toasty, caramel malt aroma. Some booziness as well. Flavor upfront is sweet caramel, toasted nuts, baked apples, baked bread. Sweet liquor. Wonderfully represented of the style. My first steinbier in some time.

Honey slathered rye bread. Creme brûlée. Oak wood. Stone fruit. Magnificent.
