A Note on This Beer

My middle school girlfriend was the bee's knees! She thought my Pokémon collection was cool, AND her Dad, “Smoothie Sal,” owned the best diner in town.

As a sweets-crazed 12 year-old boy, you better believe I was head over heels for her, and the unlimited smoothies and milkshakes!

Lo and behold, the relationship (with the free-drink fringe benefit) ended long ago. But, when I saw Westbrook released their Strawberry Shake IPA, my inner kid went berserk!

The brewers stuffed this lusciously-smooth, juicy powerhouse with heaps of real strawberry, Madagascar vanilla, and lactose. AND, it comes with a deliciously discreet 7% ABV to boot!

Hints of drippy red berry tease my tongue, while succulent waves of velvety vanilla please my persistent sweet tooth. With each smooth n’ thick sip, I feel like I’m tasting one of Sal’s famous shakes — with a boozy bonus!

It was enjoyable, there was a slight off not so enjoyable flavor as it first washes over your palate, then it smoothed out with a nice ipa bite followed through by sweet and tart notes coming from the strawberries. Definitely a great strawberry flavor in my opinion, but the flavor combo I don’t believe is working well with each other. Great attempt and I would suggest they try again with a different hop profile maybe a different malt?

I was a little disappointed with this. It’s tasty, but not what I expected. I’d compare this to a mild IPA. It has a smooth finish and a hint of strawberry, but the bitterness far outweighs the sweetness. Not at all bad, but very different from what I expected.

So this beer is totally on taste. If you like milkshake IPAs and strawberry is your jam? It’s amazing. If not? This won’t be your thing. Of course, you will probably know this before you order… so it is what it is. I’m a fan.

I can see what they were trying to do but, to me, the sweet hops don't work

Hits the tongue like a brisk IPA, but as soon as it washes down your throat, the strawberries start dancing! I was amazed at how delicious this was, I could have sworn I bite into a real strawberry! To get the full effect I found that holding the beer in your mouth for a few seconds and then swallowing really amplified the flavors!

It's interesting comparing this to the Strawberry Velvet from my previous crate. This one has a better strawberry flavor, but is less smooth and has some bitterness at the end
