A Note on This Beer
Ever heard of a Tayberry? Well, before tasting today’s oak-fermented Tayberry Farmhouse Saison from Washington’s E9, neither had we!
Turns out, a Tayberry is a cross between a tart raspberry and a juicy-sweet blackberry. They were first grown in Scotland, but E9 gets theirs from nearby Sterino Farms.
When combined with the brewery’s own mixed yeast culture and fermented for months in oak barrels, these unusual berries add a balanced sweet and tart fruitiness that simply has to be tasted.
That kind of inventive brewing earned E9 Gold and Silver in the Mixed Culture category at the 2019 Washington Beer Awards!
But, if you tell your buds you’ve got a Tayberry Saison from E9, they likely won’t have a clue what you’re talking about. Not only will they not know what a Tayberry is, but E9’s brews so rarely leave the Northwest, they’ve probably never even tried Tacoma’s oldest craft brewery.
Pop the top on this tart Saison and bright, berry aromas cascade from the pour to tantalize the senses. Take a sip, and notes of blackberry, raspberry, and dark plum roll across the palate in a sweet-tart wave of fruity juice, balanced by puckering acidity and a hint of Bretty funk.
If this is the first time you’ve heard of E9, Tayberry Farmhouse is one heck of an introduction to their tart talents. But if you want a sip, you’ll have to act fast — we have just 18 cases of this brew to share!
