A Note on This Beer

‘Tis the season for dark beer! And today’s brews are truly remarkable treats!

Up from the depths of Deschutes’ carefully-controlled cellar, we’re excited to share the ultra-rare 2014 and 2015 vintages of The Abyss. They’re ranked in the Top 50 American Imperial Stouts in the World on BeerAdvocate with world-class 99/100 scores!

Plus, these are some of the last bottles of Deschutes’ stash. Once they’re gone, these cellar gems will be next to impossible to find.

Stuff a close friend’s stocking with liquid gold, open another when all your loved ones are gathered round –– or keep a bottle to yourself. If you’re even considering giving away one of Deschutes’ opulent masterpieces, you’ve clearly been nice this year. You deserve to treat yourself, too!

Take a look:

The Abyss (2014) - 11.1% ABV - Rated 4.20 on Untappd

Brewed with blackstrap molasses, brewer’s licorice, vanilla bean, and cherry bark, each sip of The Abyss offers a new, alluring flavor to get lost in. Aged in bourbon barrels, Oregon oak barrels, and Pinot Noir casks, each pitch-black pour carries immense depth and complexity.

Seven years in the cellar only adds to the intricacy, mellowing the big ABV into liquid velvet and richening the brew’s dark-chocolate and vanilla depths.

The Abyss (2015) - 12.2% ABV - Rated 4.26 on Untappd

Taste this vintage alongside the ’14 vintage, and you’ll notice that the boozy quaffs are just as ludicrously smooth. But, while the ingredients and barrels are the same, there are subtle differences between these beers. The 2015 has a touch more vanilla and licorice with a slightly subdued sweetness, completed by a delicate red wine note on the finish.

At least, that’s what we taste. With a pair of beers this nuanced and aged this long, it’s entirely possible you might taste some of the Abyss’ other delectable facets, like undercurrents of Cherry Garcia!

If you’re a serious Stout sipper — or you know a Deschutes lover in need of a truly epic gift — today’s incredible 2-pack is sure to make for one happy craft fan.

Too old. Much of the adjuncts that make this beer has died down significantly

I don't get any barrel flavor. This beer reminds me of a Russian Imperial Stout. Nothing wrong with that as I like that style. However that is not what I was wanting or expecting with this beer. It's a decent beer but nothing special.

11/4/21 - This was very disappointing. Either this beer didn't age well or I got a bad one. The flavors are muted and overwhelmed by an off-putting bitterness. Have had a more recent version of this beer that was outstanding. Lesson learned.

This really mellowed over time. All the flavors really came together. Didn't taste metallic at all. 🍻

I struggle sometimes with these cellerable beers if I didn’t get a change to taste when it was newly released. This one was really good, but I sense that it has faded over the years

Strong oak and cherry bark up front. Complex aging that has softened the sweetness away.
