A Note on This Beer
After soaking in a sumptuous blend of molasses, cherry bark, vanilla bean, and brewer’s licorice for 12 months in Bourbon, New Oregon Oak, and Wine barrels, The Abyss Barrel Aged Imperial Stout’s rich complexity helped launch Deschutes Brewery into Dark Beer stardom.
Their brand new 2017 Abyss is an instant collector’s brew, already churning up a staggering 4.47 on BeerAdvocate and 4.19 on Untappd. In fact, frenzied fans are so gung-ho, we’ll let them speak for themselves:
@HopOnPopOff says, “This stout is roasty AF! Like Ten Fidy + Old Rasputin on roids!”
@MLThomas541 says, “Dark pitted fruit preserve on the nose, nice char. It’s damn good this year, ya’ll.”
@Barr3ls says, “Always great. This one does not disappoint.”
Aromas of crushed anise lure you in for the first sip, before bing cherries play ping pong across your palate. Chocolate ganache-drenched figs bustle in with a silky smooth waterfall of molasses and honey. Caramelized almonds and vanilla toffee notes push you to a semisweet, bitter cacao powder finish.
Ranked one of the Top 50 Imperial Stouts in the world, The Abyss is a massive source of NW pride. @Polloenfuego pretty much sums it up: “Simply put, an experience. This is an amazing beer, if I can get my hands on again, I will.”
