A Note on This Beer
After earning nearly 50 GABF medals, Deschutes Brewing has a reputation for crafting what we call “Barrel-Aged Gateway Beers.”
From pours like The Abyss to The Stoic, these are the types of brews that, once you get a taste, they unlock a whole new flavor spectrum you hadn’t known existed!
And right now, you have a chance to experience a taste of their mastery with today’s The Ages 2019 Gueuze-Style Ale.
Now, some of you may be like that one fan on Untappd asking, “What the heck is a Gueuze-Style Ale?”
Better prepare yourselves, because you’re about to experience a small-batch release gateway beer!
This style is the origin and pinnacle of Sour beer, usually reserved for top-shelf Lambic producers like Belgium’s Cantillon and 3 Fonteinen — until now. Fans who’ve tasted Deschutes can’t praise it enough.
- “As close to Cantillon as I have had in the states. Very complex, well-architected beer.” @Brett. L
- “Holy Belgian caves, Batman! This bier is fantastic.” @Louie K.
- “Best Sour I’ve ever had.” @Eric V.
In traditional Gueuze-style, Deschutes takes three different vintages of Barrel-Aged Sours and meticulously blends them, aging it all together in 100% oak barrels. The result is a cascade of saline tartness carrying funky citrus rinds, woody spice, wisps of raspberry skins, and earthy notes of hay. A sparkling effervescence on the palate leads to a dry, white pepper-laced finish that completely masks the 7.7% ABV.
A cellarable treasure, The Ages 2019 is a world-class example of the traditional style that is bound to make its mark in Deschutes’ lauded history, as well as your craft beer journey.
