A Note on This Beer
With 43 GABF awards under their belt, Deschutes creates barrel-aged gems like The Abyss and The Stoic as instant, wax-dipped collectors items. And whenever they release a new, small-batch, blended creation, fans go on high alert trying to track down a taste.
Their new 100% oak barrel-aged The Ages Gueuze-style Sour Ale is already captivating Untappd drinkers like @Brendan K., who says, “My first 5.00 rating. This beer embodies everything that an aged sour claims to be. And I think my favorite beer ever, now.”
Once you work through the thick wax and pop open this “Grand Cru” Sour, aromas of briny lemon and pear rise from your snifter. Each sip reveals a cascade of saline tartness carrying funky citrus rinds, woody spice, wisps of raspberry skins, and earthy notes of hay. A sparkling effervescence on the palate leads to a dry, white pepper-laced finish that completely masks the 8% ABV.
In the Gueuze tradition, Deschutes achieves these layers of flavor by meticulously blending different vintages of oak-aged Sours. This style is the origin and pinnacle of Sour beer, usually reserved for top shelf Lambic producers like Cantillon and 3 Fonteinen -- until now. This complex, cellarable treasure is bound to stand out in its style and make its mark in Deschutes’ lauded history.
