The craftsmanship necessary to brew today’s XXXX Quadrupel Reserva has me speechless.
Seriously, this booze-tastic 13% ABV Barrel Aged Quad took over 5 years to perfect - and that’s just the base recipe!
Five years?! I can barely remember what I was doing 5 weeks ago.
This is precisely the kind of artful dedication De Struise commits to today’s world-class XXXX. And it’s what has earned them respect as the #6 UT-rated Brewery in Belgium, scoring above Rodenbach and St Bernardus!
After perfecting the base Stout, De Struise then took XXXX three massive steps further!
- They added dark Candi Syrup and Special B Malt to give an extra dose of caramel-coated date and raisin decadence.
- Then they aged it in Bourbon barrels for boozy vanilla-caramel sweetness.
- Lastly, De Struise barrel-aged today’s pour in Madeira Oak Barrels for two years, adding dry herbal and fruity wine notes.
- The result is a devilishly divine and complex Quad dusted in roasted malts and decadent cocoa nibs.
Finding this degree of Old World brewing expertise is nearly impossible outside of Europe, which is why we smooth-talked the Belgian brewers — we begged them in our heaviest Dutch accents until we landed today’s small stash!
With only a tiny batch available overseas, any craft fan who scores a taste of this labor-of-love bottle is getting the rare chance to experience the style’s true, world-class Belgian origins.
