A Note on This Beer

When co-owners Jonathan Baker and Jeff Heck took their beers from the garage out to the streets of Atlanta, they chose the necktie as the symbol for their Monday Night Brewing. It represents the mentality that we all need to loosen up our ties and enjoy weeknights again.

And I’ll tell you, this Benevolent Overlord Imperial Stout makes enjoying any night of the week a freakin’ blast!

The brewers loaded the rich and roasty double mash Dark Beer with fresh coffee and swathes of hazelnuts. With hints of smooth vanilla and melty milk chocolate swimming in the base, every sip tastes like I’m gulping a hazelnut mocha latte for a 5 p.m. pick-me-up!

Benevolent Overlord is the kind of beer that helped earn the Atlanta brewery its place as one of the Top 3 Breweries in 2020’s US Open Beer Championships.

It pairs perfectly with those weeknights when you’re feeling daring. But, with its smooth chocolate flavor, it’s also great if you need a roasty, dark treat at Sunday brunch.

Sweet and malty at first. Very approachable with a solid black color. The more you drink the more you taste the hazelnut almost like it’s hanging around the bottom. Pro tip: pour a cooled espresso shot in the bottom of the glass and then pour BO over it for a nice caffeinated addition.

Very smooth chocolate and coffee with hints of hazelnut, definitely a sipping stout, especially with the 12%abv. Wish I bought more than 2

16oz can from Tavour. Thick black pour, brown head fades to ring. Aroma is chocolate and hazelnuts. Syrupy, sweet taste, chocolate, coffee, hazelnuts. Thick and rich. Warmth rises at the end. This is damn good.

Good coffee flavors and lots of malts. Vanilla is a little lost and chocolate is subdued. Not overly sweet.

I was super disappointed by this. On paper it’s completely up my alley. Big stout with coffee and hazelnut? Yes please! But it’s SO sweet. It’s like the stout equivalent of coffee flavored Hershey’s syrup. It got a bit better when it warmed up and mellowed a bit but it just wasn’t for me, sadly

Tastes like dark, dark coffee. It has some bitterness. Not much hazlenut, unfortunately.

Right out of the fridge this beer is wonderful with a strong coffee and hazelnut taste. As it warmed up to room temperature I started getting some fruity notes as well as a more tamed coffee taste. Overall a great beer!

Impressed with the amount of hazelnut shining through while still maintaining a decent amount of coffee. Definitely the most full hazelnut flavor I've ever had in a stout. Recommend if you love espresso and rich deep hazelnut flavors that aren't buried by lactose or additional adjuncts. Cheers!!

Confusing flavors. Coffee fights the hazelnut. Nothing stood out to me. I’ve had some excellent stouts in my day, this didn’t fit the mark.

Don’t get much of the hazelnut or coffee flavors. Overall still a tasty imperial stout with a great finish. Would probably buy again

Nice, heavy, roasted stout. Coffee is spot on and strong and the hazelnut manages to hold its own pretty well. My only critique is it’s a tad too sweet, but given the ABV it’s not much of a problem. Pours like motor oil, good stuff.

Much more like a coffee than others I’ve tried. Really sneaks up on you at 12%. Lingering aftertaste that takes away from the overall experience. Would need to pair better than I did.

Aroma is soft hazelnut, subtle coffee, and chocolate. Flavor is rich and full. Hazelnut throughout with easy coffee upfront. Finish on thick chocolate. Alcohol is real hidden. Iced coffee stout with a TON of flavor.

Really good coffee flavor, with the hazelnut going in and out at various points. Would love to see how this is coming from a barrel. Very light on the pallet, and definitely can’t sense the heat given the high ABV.

Ordered from Tavour, chilled, and poured into an Imperial pint glass. Look: dark brown, almost black, small 1/4 finger sized head that dissipated quickly to nothing. No lacing Smell: booze up front, followed by sweet dark roasted malt notes, almost dark sweet chocolate following that Taste: booze in the nose immediately, followed by super sweet dark roast, a bit of coffee and trailing sweet dark chocolate notes. The nutty notes are hidden in this and you have to reach at the very end to get it after the boozy needing Feel: full feel, syrupy, no carbonation, thick and drying Interesting beer. We had a pretty good idea what we were in store for. Dark roast, sweet coffee and hazelnut with some booze. What we got was super sweet roasty notes with a little coffee, quite a bit of booze and almost no nuttiness. We have learned that hazelnuts are difficult to capture in a beer and this one had a difficult time getting it as well. Still though, if you like thick, syrupy boozy stouts, this is a decent beer. Cheers everyone.

this thing packs a punch. first it looks like a can of ink. im talking "absolute black" absorbing all light dark. then the ABV hits you like a 2x4 when you go to stand up. its a great way to finish your day, do not recommend for day drinking
