A Note on This Beer

Today’s burly brew won a Gold medal at the 2019 San Diego International Beer Competition for its layered complexity.

So it’s no big shock that Barleywine fans from coast to coast went nuts when the brand new 2020 Bourbon Barrel-Aged O.E. dropped! Popular podcaster @dontdrinkbeers even showed up on the release announcement to let everyone know that “THIS IS NOT A DRILL!”

I’m sure plenty of you are just as eager to score a bottle — last year’s version earned a staggering 4.29 on Tavour, and the brewers at Smog City are even more excited about this one. They say it tastes like a “bourbon pecan pie.” We think that’s spot on!

As soon as you pour this caramel-colored brew into a glass, aromas of candied nuts and rich toffee immediately fill the room. On the sip, it’s all about thick, syrupy malt with complex layers of date, honey, and bourbon heat. Subtle notes of oaky vanilla and barrel char flirt with the palate on the finish, begging you to take another taste.

This year, you don’t have to join the throngs of Barleywine fiends as they traverse the wilds of L.A. to get a sip of O.E. You can score a bottle or two right here.

Rated 4.29 on Tavour; 94/100 on BeerAdvocate where it’s one of the Top 20 English Barleywines in the World!

Barleywine is either good or bad, but age it in a bourbon barrel...magical!

Really really good. I love this style and this one is top notch. The write up is spot on. Let this age for four years and it will be a 6 star beer. Wish I had more.

Exactly how I want my BW to taste.. Rolos, toffee, just enough barrel presence for some oaky tannins and vanilla, little heat

True to its description this tastes like a pecan pie. And like pecan pie, I’m satisfied with just once slice. Very enjoyable, I’ll eat it if it’s available, but it’s not something I’m going to be wishing for more than once a year.

Awesome. Perfect toffee notes. They an English barleywine should be. Not over hot from the barrel aging.

Smooth with a hint of sweetness, the high abv isn't even noticed. Sadly I couldn't really get the bourbon barrel taste, but overall great beer

This one didn't hit on the candied notes I was looking for. Good Barleywine, but hoping for better things with the 2021 drop.

Flavor is of toast, oak, tobacco, molasses, plum, raisin, apple, walnut, and bourbon. Very good barleywine, lots a flavor and not as sweet as a lot of English style BWs usually are. Drinks pretty slow and very boozy. A nice fireside beer for after dinner this Thanksgiving.

It is very good. Pretty sure this was our first barleywine. The ABV is sneaky! My husband and I split a bottle this evening (11/18/23), and I definitely felt it! I put it in a glass in the freezer for 10 minutes, and it really came across smooth and not as bitey as it was first poured. Would buy again!
