A Note on This Beer
This bodacious brew is a collab between two of the most radical craft masters in the Midwest: Nebraska’s White Elm and North Dakota’s Drekker.
Between Thrillist, Men’s Journal, CraftBeer.com, and The Beer Connoisseur, these two breweries rock nearly every “Best of the Midwest” list!
So, if you score a stash of Kitaen, you’ll be jammin’ to one of the flyest mashups since Aerosmith and Run-DMC rocked the airwaves with Walk This Way.
First, the brewers age this tubular treat in Portuguese Tawny Port Barrels, imbuing the Imperial Stout base with oaky notes of caramel and plums. Then, they add 5 lbs of Ugandan vanilla beans and a sprinkling of pink peppercorns. Finally, they add rare and unusual (but wicked awesome) Sichuan buttons!
Sichuan buttons are not actually fruit, but small, yellow flower buds — and lately, they’re totally buzzworthy! Though they don’t have much flavor, they do provide a pleasant Champagne-like zing, similar to Pop Rocks candy.
And in Kitaen, those buttons raise the roof by adding a funky tinge to its smooth waves of spiced chocolate caramel.
Suffice it to say, this brew is bitchin’. And since beers like Kitaen almost never venture outside the Great Plains, you DON’T wanna miss out today.
