A Note on This Beer

There are a ton of reasons to get excited about this time of year. But as any Barelywine fan knows, one of the biggest reasons is the long-awaited release of the seasonal, specialty variants of MASSIVE!

These barrel-aged Barleywines need no introduction. They’re some of Gigantic Brewing’s most prized beers, and they only come out once a year, in teeny tiny batches! Luckily, we were able to land 10 cases of today’s Highland Scotch Barrel Aged variant!

To craft it, Gigantic started by brewing a huge Barleywine with just one malt, Skagit Wintmalt, and letting it boil for over eight hours for a chewy, rich, ruby-hued brew. Then they aged it in Highland Scotch barrels for luxurious accents of charred oak and whiskey vanilla.

Decadent currents of sugary dates, golden caramel, and rich oak course through each sip. Swirls of vanilla and barrel spice carry after until a gorgeous, tannic whiskey finish.

If you’re anything like me, each taste will have you gleefully exclaiming “I love scotch. Scotch. Scotch. Scotch. Here it goes down. Down into my belly!” But if you’d like to go Ron Burgundy on some opulent Barleywine, you might want to hurry. The last time we had a scotch barrel-aged MASSIVE!, it sold out in just a few hours with only a 4.20 Tavour rating left behind.

Probably should've left this one to age 5 years. Oh well. Super disappointed I was only offered the crappiest barrel of the 3. Isle of Islay and anejo mezcal barrels would've been so much better. This is super strong, slightly bitter, a bit boozy and has a good lingering flavor. After disregarding my initial disappointment, this is a rather good/solid barleywine.
