A Note on This Beer
If beer isn’t one of the first things that comes to mind when you hear “flowers,” you haven’t tried today’s Nasturtium Wild Ale.
If you had, you wouldn’t even be reading this. You’d have already pounded that “Get It” button!
True to its name, this limited release was aged in oak foeders on real nasturtium flowers!
Whereas most floral beers give off herbal notes, this one has unforgettable touches of black pepper and light spice from the nasturtiums. Smacks of citrus, oak, and a tight, dry finish add to its complexity.
If you think you can find these flavors in other floral-led brews, guess again. Craft Beer & Brewing even released a list of “19 Beers Brewed with Flowers,” and not one of them contained spiced-up nasturtiums!
That’s because most brewers don’t use flowers to begin with, and when they do, nasturtiums are hardly reached for because of their unexpected dark spice notes.
But the folks at Plan Bee aren’t most brewers.
This Northeast powerhouse focuses exclusively on Wilds and Sours and uses only locally-sourced ingredients. USA Today calls them “the closest thing to tasting a sense of New York terroir available on the market.”
Those flowers that make Nasturtium so damn tasty? They were grown right on Plan Bee’s Hudson Valley farm. Even if you do ever manage to get another beer with this type of flower, it ain’t gonna taste the same!
If there’s one catch to being that concentrated on local terroir though, it’s that Plan Bee beer can’t be found in most other states. Even New Yorkers have to be part of the brewery’s exclusive “Hive” bottle club in order to snag each new release.
So consider yourself part of Plan Bee’s Hive elite just for today. Now’s your chance to get a rare sip of Nasturtium!
