A Note on This Beer
For those seeking out impeccable Farmhouse Ales in the Northeast, Hop Culture suggests Maine’s Oxbow Brewing. They’ve “established themselves as one of the most highly regarded and well-respected producers not just in the state, but their whole region!”
Which is exactly why hundreds of people trek to the brewery’s “Goods from the Woods” festival every fall for fresh Farmhouse sips. There is no 2020 event though, which is sad but understandable. Fortunately, you can still get a special four-beer tasting if you’re quick enough today!
It’s like a flight you’d get at the taproom, but even better because each comes in a 500ml bottle. Time to schedule your very own Oxbow festival at home — here’s what comes in this awesome pack:
Majestic - Blended Farmhouse Ale - 6.5% ABV
This beautiful brew is a blend of Farmhouse Ales, aged in stainless steel and oak barrels. Only, the real draw here is that the brewers blended it with their fan-favorite Magenta, a mixed-fermentation Farmhouse Ale brewed with Concord grapes!
Every tantalizing taste brims with notes of freshly baked muffins, rustic wood, and dark fruit tannins. Near the end of the sip, the fruit transforms into ripe grape and lemongrass for a memorably crisp, dry finish. Majestic indeed!
Plum Synth - Blended Farmhouse Ale with Plums - 7.5% ABV
The brewers say Plum Synth took a total of 2 years to craft, which we believe. They blended barrel-aged and stainless steel-aged mixed-fermentation Farmhouse Ales together, then let the mixture age on Italian plums!
The brew’s deep purple pour with an indigo-charcoal head is the immediate head-turner, though it isn’t long before jammy stone fruit aromas swirl up, and a deep sip becomes inevitable. The precision and care involved in this Farmhouse is tangible — it overflows with delicious plum and prune complexity, punctuated with undertones of oaky vanilla and a pleasant, crushed berry-like tartness.
Polyfloral - Bière de Miel - 9.0% ABV
If Mother Nature could brew a Farmhouse-style sipper all on her own, it’d probably be in the vein of Polyfloral. The brewers crafted this mixed-culture fermentation Bière de Miel — or “honey beer” — with real Maine wildflower honey. Then, they aged it in oak barrels on an impressive mosaic of cherries, raspberries, strawberries, rose hips, and hibiscus.
The honey sweetness is there, but as a soft current that carries the berry and floral flavors throughout each taste. If you could taste a bright, blooming field of flowers, this would be it!
Bobasa - Blended Bière de Garde - 6.5% ABV
Bobasa exemplifies why Oxbow continues to be at the forefront of Farmhouse Ale innovation. To craft this effervescent sipper, the brewers first combined barrel-aged smoked Bière de Garde ales aged between one and two years. After which, they blended its toasted malt character with a fresh, tart Farmhouse Ale and let it bottle condition for an additional 8 months.
The result is something otherworldly. Every sip dances vividly between tart and funky. Undertones of sweet cherry and whispers of smoke carry throughout. Even experienced craft fans will want more than a few tastes to take stock of it all.
