A Note on This Beer
“Soie” is French for “silk.” Today’s Soie from The Bruery may not contain actual silk, but for a colossal 17.1% ABV Old Ale it sips down shockingly smooth. Ooh là là!
The acclaimed California brewers crafted this rich delight specially for their “douzième anniversaire” or as we’d call it, their 12-year anniversary. They’ve got a lot to celebrate too — their 10 GABF medals and 2x People’s Choice Best Brewery at the Firestone Walker Invitational Beer Festival just scratch at the surface of their acclaim!
To craft this celebratory behemoth, The Bruery pulled out one of the most masterful (and arduous) tricks in the book — Solera blending.
They set aside a portion of each year’s anniversary ale in Bourbon Barrels, using a tiered system where aging beer is poured into freshly-emptied barrels to age a little longer. This way, the beer becomes incredibly layered and complex, picking up flavors from all the beers that sat in the oak casks before it.
Right from the first mouthful, it’s remarkable how much Soie overflows with deep complexity in its silky body. Delectable notes of toffee and creamy vanilla mingle with jammy dark fruit and oak character. You can taste the booze for sure, but it’s a pleasant warmth that slowly embraces with every sip.
So, raise a glass and toast to The Bruery’s 12 years of accomplishments. As the French say, “à votre santé !”
